Ancient Avenue of Acers
Our ancient avenue of acers is a stunning sight, undoubtedly one of the most photographed spots in the garden during the captivating autumn season. This picturesque pathway is lined with majestic acer trees, each boasting a rich history of over one hundred years. Their gnarled, twisted trunks and branches create a captivating tapestry of shapes, and their leaves ignite a fiery palette of reds and oranges.
Autumn Trees
Liquidambar
One of the most remarkable trees for autumn colour, this tree is renowned for its vibrant and dynamic foliage. As the seasons shift, the large, distinctive leaves of this tree undergo an incredible transformation. Initially, the leaves display a rich crimson hue, they then transition into a mesmerizing shade of purple. As autumn progresses, the colours continue to shift, culminating in a brilliant display of golden hues. This astonishing spectrum of colours creates a visual feast for the eyes, making the tree a focal point in the garden.
Handkerchief or Dove Tree
During spring, the flower-like bracts resemble the soft, fluttering wings of doves or the gentle sway of handkerchiefs caught in a light breeze. As the year progresses into autumn, a remarkable transformation occurs, the leaves transition to stunning shades of golden yellow and deep orange.
Autumn Plants and Shrubs
Cornus
Our flowering Dogwood collection is exceptional; among them, one cultivar stands out as a particular favourite: Cornus ‘Norman Hadden.’ As the seasons change, the leaves transform into a vibrant palette of reds, oranges, and yellows, creating a stunning display. In addition to its remarkable foliage, Cornus' Norman Hadden' produces peculiar red fruits that add an intriguing element to the tree's overall appearance. These fruits, which appear in clusters at the ends of the branches, have a unique quality that makes them seem as though they are floating in mid-air.
Nuts and berries
There is something undeniably magical about witnessing the transformation of the garden as autumn unfolds and nature displays its artistry. An array of vibrant berries adorns the landscape like nature's own decorations. Each berry, in its unique hue—ranging from deep crimson to bright orange—adds a splash of colour that contrasts beautifully with the fading greens of summer.
As we venture further into the garden, the woodland floor is a magnificent tapestry of colour and texture with fallen gold, amber, russet leaves, and shiny brown conkers. You can also see toadstools and fungi, adding an element of whimsy to the woodland walk.
